Beauty Is In the Eye Of the Beholder
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Well, what do you see when you look in the mirror? Is it your eyes, your smile, your flowing hair, or the twists of your natural curls and kinks? What would you change? Is my head too big, my teeth to dull, my skin too oily; my hair too thick, or too thin? Are my legs too long, arms too fat, six pack or muffin top, love handles, Argh!!!
Beauty is defined as the quality or qualities of a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses. Those senses are influenced by different factors that affect the beholders image of beauty like upbringing, sense-of-self, affirming parents and the list goes on.
The beholder’s viewpoint is skewed based on internal and external factors. Depression and anxiety are factors that influence internal perception of outward happenings. It usually restricts a positive outlook on most personal or environmental experiences.
Apathy towards one’s own sense-of-self and overall confidence are questioned frequently and a depressed person often finds it difficult to find anything positive to say about him/herself.
Anxiety, another factor, can cause uncertainty about what is being perceived. Fears of death, being liked, questioning whether you are making the right or wrong decisions incessantly are just small pieces of anxiety’s influence on perception.
Both of these very common influences affect the perception of beauty and how a person views oneself when they do something as simple as, looking in the mirror before walking out the door or making decisions in the work environment with confidence.
Those who have experienced this before understand how difficult it is to alter these negative perceptions when feeling anxious or depressed and may benefit from talking to a counselor or therapist. Counseling can help resolve some of those negative influences and aide the individual on working towards creating a more positive self-image, looking in the mirror and seeing the beautifully and wonderfully made person that you are. A counselor or therapist is an unbiased person who listens, reflects with you and works alongside you to strengthen your defenses when negativity arises.
Beauty is in fact in the eye of the beholder, so make sure that your eyes aren’t blurred.
