Acupuncture and the Flu

The flu bug is among us once again. Why is it that so many more people get sick in the winter? It’s not like the virus hibernates when it’s warm and sunny outside, or does it? Regardless of how these things happen, of one thing, there is no doubt: as the year runs along, the weather changes with the seasons and so do the challenges we face from our environment.

Even today, with insulation, central heating and air-conditioning, and refrigerators and freezers, we are still at the mercy of the elements.

When it is cold and damp outside, arthritis feels much worse, and we are more prone to illness. Chinese medicine was developed before the concept of germs and viruses. In this paradigm, it is easy to explain: cold-damp is a pathogen, dangerous on its own. If our metabolic response to the cold and damp fails to correctly react and fight it off, or the cold-damp is simply too strong to kick it out, it becomes lodged inside the body and deeper issues can result.

This is why it is so important to get rid of a cold as soon as possible. When it lingers and we live with it, we run the risk of creating a chronic condition.

It is like having an unwanted house guest who breaks the fine china and messes up the bathroom. If we’re smart and strong, we show them the door. If we’re confused and don’t have strong boundaries, we may try to placate them instead and learn to live with an obnoxious boarder. When our energy flow is balanced and full, we usually have little problem kicking out unwanted pests. However, if we are worn out, whether from lack of rest, poor diet, stress, or all of the above, we may not have what it takes to oust the vile visitor.

This is where acupuncture can be of paramount importance. By removing blockages to the flow of energy (Qi) and strengthening the flow, acupuncture is a great way to stay healthy in the midst of change.
