The Health Benefits Of Slowing Down

The Health Benefits Of Slowing Down

Why Women Need Intentional Rest

Women often carry more than what can be seen. We manage responsibilities, care for others, meet deadlines, solve problems, and move from one task to the next – sometimes without realizing how long it has been since we truly rested.

Our culture often treats busyness as a sign of productivity and importance. Yet constantly moving does not necessarily mean we are living well. The body, mind, and spirit all need periods of rest, reflection, and renewal.

Intentional rest is more than getting enough sleep. It is creating space to step away from constant demands and allow ourselves to simply be present. This may look like sitting quietly for a few minutes before beginning the day, taking a peaceful walk, practicing gentle movement, praying, reflecting on Scripture, journaling, or simply breathing deeply without immediately moving on to the next responsibility.

For women especially, rest can sometimes come with guilt. There may always be another person who needs something, another email to answer, another room to clean, or another task that feels more important than taking time for ourselves. But rest is not laziness, nor is it something we have to earn after everything else is finished.

From a Christian perspective, rest is woven throughout Scripture. Jesus Himself stepped away from crowds and responsibilities to pray and be still. Biblical rhythms of work and rest remind us that we were never meant to live in a constant state of doing.

Slowing down also gives us an opportunity to notice what busyness can hide. What are we feeling? What has been weighing on us? Where do we need support? What has God been trying to bring to our attention that we have been too distracted to hear?

Creating a healthier rhythm does not require completely changing your life. Start with small sacred pauses. Take three quiet minutes between activities. Put your phone down while drinking your morning coffee. Sit in silence before bed. Take a slow walk without trying to accomplish anything.

Rest does not have to be elaborate to be meaningful.

Sometimes the healthiest thing we can do is stop striving long enough to breathe, listen, and remember that our worth is not measured by how much we accomplish. Intentional rest creates room to reconnect – with ourselves, with the people we love, and with God.

A life of greater peace may not begin by doing more. It may begin by learning when to slow down.
