5 Morning Habits That Supercharge Your Vitality Advantage

Dr. Nandi coined the term “vitality advantage” to refer to his five pillars of energy, resilience, and engagement, designed to help people and organizations reach their full potential.

Every morning, you can take a piece of his wisdom and supercharge your day to give you that competitive edge and seize each moment while enjoying the life you create for yourself.

Eat a Well-Balanced Breakfast

If your typical breakfast consists of you stopping at the local Starbucks for a mocha and a scone, it’s time to rethink this meal. That’s not enough to fuel your mind and body. It’s only enough to spark an initial caffeine and sugar rush to start the day, but it will eventually lead to a crash.

Instead, begin each day with a power-packed, nutrient-rich breakfast consisting of protein and some fiber.

While coffee is more than likely a habit, it’s okay to keep it as part of your morning routine.

However, consider adding a small glass of orange juice or some lemon water as well for some hydration and nutrients.

Come an hour or two from now, you won’t feel tired and sluggish or find yourself heading to the vending machine in dire need of something to get you through.

Find 10 Minutes for Quiet Time

What does your usual morning routine look like? Do you instantly hit the ground running once the alarm goes off — take a shower, get ready, and head off to work? This isn’t the most productive way to start your day.

Aim to wake up a little earlier, if need be. Compensate by going to sleep earlier so you can have some quiet time and take your morning dash for the door a bit more slowly. In fact, reserve at least 10 minutes in the morning to sit quietly and chart out the course for your day.

By planning, you’ll have goals and a focus. While unexpected hiccups may happen along the way, you can feel confident you’re ready to seize every aspect of the day you can.

You may even want to think about what you’re thankful for so you have an everyday reminder of the good in your life, which can kickstart the next 14-16 hours.

Try Deep-Breathing Exercises

It just seems like stress is a normal part of most people’s day, and research shows that nearly 40 percent of Americans are hitting their breaking point. From all the stressors at work to just not getting enough time with family to everything else, it’s not surprising.

You can take matters into your own hands each day to try to ease your stress soon after you wake up. Whether it’s during your quiet time or in addition to it, strive to perform some deep-breathing exercises.

This not only helps to clear your mind, but it also eases anxiety and improves mental clarity as you increase your oxygen intake throughout the body. Not to mention, you’re stimulating your parasympathetic system, which helps your body know it’s time to relax. Moreover, you’ll lower your heart rate and blood pressure while you prime your body for the day by easing your stress response.

One last benefit, though there are others — these exercises reduce your cortisol levels as well, which is a stress hormone (so less is better).

Start Your Day With Some Tunes

Studies suggest music has an impact on your mood and mental health. While you want to keep those angry heavy metal and sappy love songs off the morning playlist, cranking up some uplifting, up-tempo music each day as you get your shower and get dressed can be just what you need to motivate yourself. You could even add upbeat music to your daily commute.

Nothing like some encouraging words to get you through gridlock traffic in the morning, right?

Water Before Coffee Makes a Person Healthy, Wealthy, and Wise

Maybe that isn’t the expression, but making sure you’re hydrating is an excellent, healthful way to begin your morning.

Think about how thirsty you wake up. You probably take just a sip of water, if that, and then start your day caffeinating to the max, from 7:00 a.m. to at least 3:00 p.m.

That’s no way to keep your health in check. While caffeine in moderation has been shown to have health benefits, it’s dehydrating and can cause you to feel jittery and anxious.

So before you start drinking any coffee, make it a point to drink at least one full glass of water.

Your entire body will thank you, from your kidneys to your skin to your brain and heart.

Powering your day doesn’t consist of a caffeine binge. It’s comprised of little steps you can take to boost your vitality, allowing you to have a clear mind and energy and be more productive throughout the day.
