When Is Counseling Right For You?

Everyone deserves to be happy, to reach their full potential, and to live a truly authentic, peaceful life. In counseling, you have the opportunity to explore and address any issues that may stand in the way of your happiness in a supportive, caring environment.

Often times due to work, school, family, and social responsibilities we often forget to listen to ourselves and the internal thoughts that may affect our mental and physical health. We may experience a life transition such as an unexpected career change, marriage, birth of a child, or a loss of a loved one that impacts our happiness and quality of life. We find it hard to cope with life's stressors, difficult to enjoy social activities, or struggle to concentrate at work or school.

It is important that we self-assess from time to time and ask ourselves, “Are my internal thoughts positive? Am I the person I want to be? If not, then why?” Since thoughts generate feelings that generate actions, it is important to listen to our internal thoughts.

There are so many caring, trained mental health professionals willing to assist others that no one should ever feel alone or unsupported as they address their life goals and challenges. One of the most important factors in successful counseling is to work with a counselor that you feel comfortable with and you feel can help you.

Remember, you know yourself best. Second, believe that the counseling process of analysis and assessment works. Third, sincerely want the desired change you are seeking, even if it means things might get worse before they get better. And lastly, be willing to do the hard work to achieve your counseling goals. You are worth it!

If you have persistent thoughts of harming yourself or others, you should seek counseling with a trained, mental health professional immediately. For the Prince William County area, call the ACTS 24 hour free hotline at
