What do you think of when you read the phrase “bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT)?” Many people think of menopause and associated symptoms of hot flashes, night sweats, poor sleep, fatigue, and weight gain. Others think of andropause and erectile dysfunction, diminished libido, loss of strength, and poor post exertional recovery. But it seems that many people are unaware of the other health benefits that bioidentical hormone replacement therapy provides.

While the troublesome symptoms of menopause and andropause do benefit from bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, there are many other health benefits to be gained from optimizing hormonal levels. As the decline in hormone levels leads to the menopausal and andropausal symptoms it also diminishes a person's vitality and overall health and increases the risk of chronic disease issues.

Low hormonal levels impact metabolism, body composition, and glucose regulation which increases the risk of metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance as well as cardiovascular disease. Optimal hormonal levels with BHRT are beneficial to improve insulin sensitivity, decrease visceral fat, benefit lipids/cholesterol, and decrease the risk of atherosclerosis. The addition of BHRT to healthy dietary choices and an active lifestyle improves metabolic and cardiovascular health.

Maintaining or improving muscle and bone health is also an important benefit of optimal hormonal levels for healthy aging. In addition to an optimal vitamin D level and resistance exercises, BHRT also improves bone density, which is key in treating or preventing osteoporosis and decreasing the risk of bone fractures. Optimal hormonal levels are also beneficial for memory and brain health as well as mood.

An old adage says that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. So, consider taking the time to evaluate your hormonal levels so you can take that step to optimize your levels and optimize your health. There is not a better time than now to achieve a healthier you. Your body will thank you.
