Assisted Living

No matter what your health status, your age or situation now, eventually everyone will need assistance later in life it's just natural. There are many options people consider when the time comes. Assisted living, retirement communities, home health and other services are available for people to choose from.

As the director of nursing in a retirement community, I see the many sides of living in your own home vs. moving into an assisted living facility.

Considering leaving your home and making a move to a new environment can be a stressful time. But, it's also a change that can solve many problems and can improve quality of life and make life more fun, interesting and less burdensome.

It is important to recognize the need for this type of change, or intervention, and the signs that this time may have come. Medical issues can put a person at risk for an adverse event at home or put you in a situation where you are unable to totally care for yourself.

Social activities can decrease to the point where you would be more stimulated in an assisted living environment. And, basic needs, like medication oversight, food preparation, transportation, and regular medical visits, at some point, can all be handled by the staff at a facility easier than they can be handled at home.

The importance of an intervention prior to an accident or medical event is the key. Assisted living facilities encourage residents to be as independent as possible, while maintaining safety. Facilities that have 24 hour licensed nursing staff can provide the support you need now and in the future. With all these services and activities the key is to continue to provide quality of life for the residents as long as possible.
