Changing Mental Health: Everyone Deserves a Therapist

Mental health has long been considered a topic not to discuss; however, mental healthcare should actually be a priority topic of discussion.

Life has many peaks and valleys; yet there are times when you may not want to talk to your friends or family about what bothers you. Qualified licensed mental healthcare providers are available who will guide you through problem-solving, decision-making, and goal-setting strategies that will help you make the best life choices for you.

Therapy is not an easy step for most however we hope to change that stigma. Everyone deserves a therapist. It’s not just about having a critical level mental health diagnosis; for most individuals it’s about coping with everyday life and daily obstacles that somehow, for whatever reason, we didn’t learn or were not exposed to teachings of how to overcome.

Stress and anxiety are two of the leading antigens for physical and mental defects. In a new study in Nature Neuroscience (March 2018) by Jaideep Bains, PhD and his team at the Cumming School of Medicine’s Hotchkiss Brain Institute (HBI), at the University of Calgary they have discovered that stress transmitted from others can change the brain in the same way as real stress does.

Stress and anxiety are often defined as any uncomfortable emotional experience accompanied by predictable biochemical, physiological and behavioral changes that happen in the mind and body. If left untreated, stress and anxiety have extreme effects on the body, mind and spirit. Self-help books, videos and blogs can offer resources to manage stress however sitting with a qualified licensed professional counselor will give you a safe place to learn how to appropriately manage stress and anxiety and adopt ways to excel. Therapy is the way to go.

Strategies for coping with stress and anxiety have much to do with how we process the world around us and our place in it. Using cognitive behavioral therapy strategies and skills such as effective deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation techniques, and cognitive regulation shifting from cognitive distortions to positive narratives to behavioral adjustments to positive outcomes helps to decrease symptoms of stress and anxiety.  Yes, it may sound like a lot to “process” yet it is an effective theoretical practice in CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) and Mindfulness Therapy.

Give yourself a boost. Find a therapist that fits your needs. You deserve the best. Consider an open conversation with a therapist. Remember…life happens one conversation at time; have an open conversation today.
