Do Not Treat Your Car Better Than You Treat Your Mouth

Patients always want to know why dental treatment is so expensive. Why does a root canal cost $1,000 (for example), or why does my dentist need to put an expensive crown on my tooth after a root canal?

Dentists often hear things, like, “I don't want a partial denture, I want implants, but they cost way too much.” Without hesitation, I always compare the mouth to a car.

If you have a car, do you take it in for an oil change and tune up on a regular basis? Eight out of 10 people would say yes, while 4-5 out of 10 people do not see the dentist on a regular basis (which is every six months). If your car does not receive the maintenance required to keep it healthy, you'll be paying a lot of money for new rotors, because your brake pads are worn out, a new engine, because your oil level has been low or dirty for a long period of time.

Well it's the same for your mouth. Only you can prevent yourself, barring any unforeseen circumstances, (e.g. falling or trauma), from paying so much money to the dentist. See your dentist every six months for your oil change and tune up. Get your teeth checked and examined twice a year. If a small cavity is discovered, get it filled. Don't wait until it hurts or is sensitive. That's like waiting for your car to start stalling or not starting at all to take it to the dealership. The price just went up.

Floss and brush correctly and regularly. Don't eat a bag of popcorn or nuts without cleaning up after yourself. Bring your child into the dental office as soon as they get their first tooth. Your dentist is there to educate you on the do's and don'ts of excellent oral hygiene. Every child needs fluoride treatments twice a year to help prevent cavities. If your child is cavity prone, ask about sealants to help prevent getting cavities on their other teeth.

These are just a few tid bits of information that dentists love to pass on to our patients.

Is it time for your oil change and tune up?
