Botox and Dermal Fillers In the Dental Office
The concept of going to your dentist to receive Botox and dermal filler injections may seem like a foreign idea. However, the use of these products in the dental office is not only a growing trend, but is also the perfect fit when considering how these procedures enhance a smile. The dentist is trained unlike any medical doctor. Dentists focus specifically on the maxillofacial area of the body and facial aesthetics. Your dentist is trained to look at the symmetry of the face and manipulate the smile area to enhance one's facial features. With this being one of the dentists main focuses while in training and throughout their career, it is no wonder, dentists are naturals when it comes to providing Botox and dermal filler injections.
According to the American Academy of Facial Esthetics, “Botox is FDA approved for cosmetic use to improve the look of fine lines and superficial wrinkles between the brows caused from every day brow furrowing as well as for migraines. Facial expressions like smiling, frowning or squinting can also cause wrinkles and Botox is very effective in these areas. If you find that the early signs of aging are becoming apparent or if your facial expressions are causing premature wrinkles to appear, then Botox may be for you. Botox is also used in the prevention of wrinkles as well, by prohibiting you from making the facial gestures that cause wrinkles.”
Botox is also being used to treat Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders in patients. TMJ disorders can cause jaw pain and limited jaw mobility. Botox is injected into the masseter muscle to relieve stress on the joint and muscle, thereby relieving pain and discomfort.
Why choose a dentist for these procedures? In addition to the dentist's focus to enhance facial esthetics, dentists are trained in providing anesthesia to numb areas of the face and mouth. This expertise is essential to providing a comfortable Botox session. Furthermore, the ADA recommends that you visit your dentist at least every six months for your regular dental cleaning and check-up. Botox can be applied at these visits and maintained with your hygiene schedule.
It is highly recommended that you choose a dentist or medical professional that has completed additional training in these fillers. Dentists with the appropriate credentials are often approved by PACE (Program Approved for Continuing Education) through the Academy of General Dentistry.
