You Don't Have To Fall

Being independent and healthy is a major concern for all of us; even more so for people over the age of 65. A fall can be devastating to a senior and can affect their quality of life. Oftentimes it will lead to hospitalization (causing financial burden) and occasionally, time spent recovering in a long-term care facility with the possibly of never returning to their home. The Center for Disease Control reports that each year one-third of the older adult population will experience a fall, that 1 out of 10 will result in a serious injury, and that falls are the leading cause of injury deaths. Risk of falls can be minimized. So, how can you protect and safeguard yourself or a loved one?
Understand the Risk Factors
Mobility problems due to muscle weakness or balance problems
Chronic health conditions such as stroke or arthritis
Vision changes and vision loss
Decrease or loss of sensation in the feet
Poor footwear
Medication side effects and/or interactions
Home and environmental hazards (clutter, poor lighting, etc.)
Incorrect size, type, or use of walkers, canes, or crutches
Poorly designed public spaces (awkward steps, lack of handrails, uneven concrete/surfaces)
What Can You Do Now?
Make your space as clutter free as possible
Utilize non-skid rugs or remove altogether
Coil or tape loose wires close to the wall so as not to trip over them
Remove things from off the floor (books/magazines)
Check for proper lighting and loose/uneven steps/torn carpet in stairwells
Make use of hand rails and skid proof strips in bathtub/showers
Have a discussion with your physical therapist and/or consult your physician so he or she can perform a fall risk assessment and prescribe therapeutic exercises for you. Adding in an exercise routine to include such things as tai chi, aquatic exercise, yoga, and strength training could help improve overall health and wellness and reduce the risk of falls.
