Metabolism Matters
Two-thirds of Americans are overweight. In most cases of significant weight gain, high blood pressure, adult on-set diabetes and other chronic illness will result. Research shows we have gained weight over the years because many foods today contain more sugar and fat and is served in larger portions.
The amount of calories we eat a day is proportionate to the amount of weight we gain or lose. Therefore, knowing the amount of calories we need on a daily basis, otherwise known as our metabolic rate, can help us make healthier food choices.
How is Metabolic Rate determined?
Genetics will initially determine the amount of calories we need each day at rest. This is also termed as basal metabolic rate (BMR).
As we age, BMR will decrease, although an effective eating strategy and exercise program can increase BMR. Each individual has a unique BMR number, which can be determined through a metabolism test administered by a trained health practitioner.
How do we get the weightoff and keep it off?
For weight loss, the initial concept of eating less and exercising more is understood by many, but a successful weight loss plan should consist of at least two phases, the weight loss phase and weight maintenance phase.
The weight loss phase should speed up the weight loss, and the weight maintenance phase should be designed for a lifetime. Whether you are in the weight loss or weight maintenance plan, weekly nutrition support by a trained health professional is important.
