A Solution To Stress

Stress has become a BAD word. However, it has been proven by our personal experiences that stress cannot be avoided. In addition, it is important to remember that a little stress now and then is beneficial since it assures us that our body systems are responding appropriately. Sadly, stress becomes a problem when it becomes chronic. Consequently, most of the major illnesses are related to stress. Dr. Phyllis A. Balch defines stress as “any physical, mental or emotional reaction that causes our body to lose its natural way to act, think. or feel.”

In stressful situations the “fight-or-flight” syndrome is responsible for the body's reactions to stress. As a signal to help us react, the body releases two hormones into the bloodstream, cortisol and adrenalin. They stay in the bloodstream for hours. Imagine the long lasting negative effects to our bodies. Three possible solutions to reduce or eliminate stress are

  1. Eliminate the perceived danger as quickly as possible

  2. Learn ways to avoid similar recurrences, and finally

  3. Find effective ways to help you de-stress.

Thankfully, foot reflexology is a proven natural way to de-stress. In Complementary and Alternative Medicine SOURCEBOOK 4th edition by Amy L. Sutton, Sutton skillfully compares reflexology and massage because the two services are usually confused. Two similarities she mentioned include the use of the hands to apply their technique and the shared goal to “improve the client's well-being.” A major difference is that clients are fully clothed throughout the hour session. The purpose of foot reflexology is to perform a non-invasive form of examination.

Recently, during the exploration phase of his session, a client revealed that he had been given eyeglasses prescription by his doctor a few months earlier. Interestingly, he did not wear glasses to the session and he forgot to write this information on his intake form. He shared this vision update with me while I worked on his foot technique corresponding to the eyes reflex area. Another client told me that she has difficulty sleeping but within minutes of the session she was snoring! In reflexology, our bodies have a 10-energy zone division that represents the reflex area of our body organs and glands. These feet zones when stimulated through the use of the fingers and/or the thumbs have the same effect on the corresponding reflex body area. Finally, foot reflexology helps us maintain our energy and health, thus it helps reduce stress.
