Boost Your Immunity With Ayurveda

Winter is often seen as a cold and flu season, a time for low immunity. According to Ayurveda, wellness is the state of experiencing good health. Ayurveda is not about suppressing symptoms, but about addressing the root cause of our disease.

We need to understand what is compromising our immune system, and change our lifestyle to correct the underlying causes – whatever they may be.  Keeping our digestive fire (called Agni) strong is critical for building and maintaining our immune system.  What are immunity-enhancing foods? Food that transforms quickly into ojas (vigor) is good for immunity and food that transforms to ama (toxins) is bad for immunity.

Cook With Immune-Boosting Spices and Keep Agni Strong

Different spices have specific immune-boosting properties. Turmeric has an immune-modulating effect, because it is detoxifying and enhances the intelligence of the immune cells.

Similarly spices such as, ginger, black pepper, cumin, cloves and cinnamon burns the toxins in your body and helps the nutrients reach the deeper tissues. These spices will also help you keep your agni strong. You can also sip hot water, or ginger tea throughout the day to boost agni.

Eat Immunity-boosting Foods

These include organic, fresh, easily digested, wholesome and unprocessed foods such as organic milk and yogurt, highly pigmented fruits, nuts and seeds, green leafy vegetables and whole grains.

Eat At Regular Times
Throughout the Day

Eating at irregular times and sleeping during the day can negatively affect both your body rhythms, so eat your meals at a fixed time and follow a balanced daily routine.

Lifestyle Tips To
Build Immunity

Get good sleep. In winter the days are shorter, the nights longer and nature is at rest. Take advantage of the natural tendency to rest more and you will wake up feeling fresher.

Get out and be more active. A daily brisk walk in the fresh air is an excellent routine. It also kindles your agni and improves digestion.

Give yourself an oil massage. Massage helps stimulate all organs of your body and it helps you build up resistance to stress and disease.

Do yoga and meditate. These positively affect the immune response in the body by lowering stress, clearing stagnation, and encouraging fluidity throughout the tissues.

Ayurveda teaches us that strong immunity is the natural outcome of good health, which depends on balanced agni, a healthy diet and a supportive lifestyle.
