Myths About Chiropractic

People believe that once they see a chiropractor, they must always go back. This statement is just silly, considering that no one can force you to do anything you aren’t willing to do. That being said, seeing a chiropractor on a regular basis for routine visits is a practice that many choose to partake.

Routine chiropractic treatments, whether a patient is in pain or not, help to ensure that the joints of the spinal column and the surrounding structures of the body are aligned and moving correctly. When mobility of one joint is restricted, compensation by the surrounding areas must occur, adding extra stress to a wider region of the body. These alterations from normal musculoskeletal function, no matter how subtle, can lead to future injuries and degeneration of the structures affected.

In short, chiropractic care can be compared to routine dental visits. You shouldn’t visit the dentist only when you have a toothache and the same goes for chiropractic.

Another myth is that chiropractors are not real doctors. The accepted title of one who practices chiropractic is “Doctor of Chiropractic.” The plain and simple truth is that Doctors of Chiropractic must complete a four-year program at an accredited college of chiropractic after obtaining a Bachelor’s degree.

In fact, chiropractic programs consist of over 4,400 classroom hours. That is more classroom hours than many medical programs. A chiropractor is not able to prescribe drugs or perform surgery, but that is not what defines a “doctor”.

A third chiropractic myth is that the “cracking” or “popping” noise heard when a chiropractic adjustment is administered is somehow dangerous.

Many people believe that when a joint makes an audible “pop” that it is the bones rubbing together and that this rubbing damages the joint. This is a popular misconception.

When a chiropractor finds a joint that is restricted and not functioning properly, he or she will apply a specific adjustment to free the joint from the restriction. To over-simplify, the bone is “stuck” and the doctor restores its proper range of motion with the adjustment. When this is done, the bone is moved causing the space between it and the adjacent bone to open.

The joint is filled with fluid (called synovial fluid) that the body uses as a lubricant. So, at the moment that the chiropractic adjustment is delivered and the joint space opens, a small vacuum “pop” is created.

Knowledge and understanding are key when choosing which path one should take when exploring one’s healthcare options. Listed above are only a small sampling of the common misconceptions about chiropractic care.

If you have questions regarding chiropractic care, a good chiropractor would be more than happy to sit down and shed light on how beneficial, safe and effective chiropractic can be for you and your family.
