Types Of Laser Resurfacing Techniques

Types Of Laser Resurfacing Techniques

Different lasers work in different ways, and each has its own unique advantage. Here’s a quick overview of what we may recommend, based on your skin and your goals:

Ablative Lasers (CO2, Erbium): Gently remove the outer skin layer to address deeper lines, scars, or pigmentation

CO2 Lasers: Best for significant sun damage or deeper wrinkles

Erbium Lasers: Ideal for moderate resurfacing, especially in lighter to medium skin tones

Non-Ablative Lasers (YAG, Fractional): Stimulate skin repair without removing the top layer

YAG Laser: Penetrates deeper for subtle improvements with less surface impact

Fractional Lasers: Treat micro-zones of skin, speeding up healing and lowering risk

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light): Best for targeting redness, sunspots, or mild unevenness – without any downtime

We’ll talk through each option with you and help you understand what will work best for your needs and your lifestyle.

Is This Treatment Right For You?

Laser resurfacing can be a great option if you’re looking to improve:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Uneven texture or tone
  • Acne scarring
  • Sun damage or age spots

However, your skin type and medical history play a role. If you have a darker skin tone, certain types of lasers may carry a higher risk of pigment changes. We always customize treatment to ensure safety and optimal results.

This treatment may not be recommended if you have active breakouts, have recently had other cosmetic procedures, or have certain medical conditions. That’s why we’ll start with a careful evaluation – to make sure everything is right before we begin.

What Happens During the Procedure

We start with a pre-treatment consultation to prepare your skin and answer your questions. You’ll be advised to avoid sun exposure, and we may recommend certain skincare products to prep your skin.

On the day of your treatment, we’ll apply a numbing cream or use local anesthesia for comfort. The laser device is then passed gently across your skin in targeted areas. The procedure takes anywhere from 30 minutes to over an hour depending on your treatment plan. You might feel a warming sensation or light pressure. Most patients say it feels similar to a strong facial or light sunburn.

Recovery & Results

Healing looks different depending on the type of laser used. With more intense lasers (like CO2), expect a few days of redness, swelling, or flaking. Gentler lasers, like fractional or IPL, may have minimal downtime. Either way, we’ll give you a full guide for how to care for your skin afterward.

During healing, your skin may feel sensitive. It’s important to avoid direct sun, use gentle skincare, and stay hydrated. Most patients start seeing visible improvement in tone and texture within a week or two, with full results improving over time. For lasting results, you may be recommended to do more than one session—but the outcome is worth it. You’ll enjoy smoother skin, fewer wrinkles, and a refreshed complexion.
