Skin and Your Health
It’s important to remember that our skin is the largest organ of the body and it needs to be protected and properly managed just like the internal organs. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends exercise as a safe way to improve circulation and boost the immune system to help keep the skin looking youthful.
Look and listen to your skin. Pay attention to any swellings, discolorations, circulation issues or even new growths or lumps because these could be early signs of heart disease. Any misshaped moles or changes in its shape, size, or color could be cancerous and should be checked by a dermatologist. New stretch marks can show a sudden and dramatic change in your size whether it be a healthy change or not.
When one gains weight it causes the skin to stretch and to grow to meet the new demands the body needs. Skin needs to be clean and comfortable for it to maintain its natural tendencies. If one is overweight they can cause stretch marks to occur, varicose veins to appear due to the new weight added to the lower part of the body, and also corns on the feet can also become a problem. One also has to continue to clean the body, especially the folds of the excess skin to prevent rashes. Hygiene is an important part of maintaining our skin and overall body’s health.
Exercise and diet are the best way to maintain a healthy weight and an overall healthy lifestyle. ACSM recommends 150 minutes a week of moderate exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise to maintain good cardiovascular health. To lose weight 300 minutes of moderate exercise per week is recommended, but exceeding this amount can lead to injury.
Exercise helps to decrease inflammation, relieves unwanted stress, can help increase self-esteem, and can help ensure a better, more restful sleep. Even sweating is a positive side effect of exercise; it will help to release toxins and impurities in your body, which can cause painful skin reactions, blemishes to appear, or achiness in the body.
Keeping a proper body weight will lessen the possibility of complications and will help the skin maintain its health. Remember to wear sunscreen whenever you will be out in the sun for long periods of time and wear a strong enough SPF that will last the day. To keep up with any changing skin issues go to a dermatologist regularly to maintain good skin health.
Wellness is about overall health of the body, not just the physical appearances of a person. Keeping the skin clean and healthy will lead to an overall healthier body. When you have skin issues you can become achy, fatigued, or itchy. Feeling physically bad will reflect how you view yourself and your mental status. Keep up with a routine exercise program to help decrease the chance of complications and to increase the health of your overall body.
