Safe Aesthetic Procedures Pearls For All Skin Types

Although there are a variety of aesthetic procedures on the market, only some are adaptable to people of color. In regards to injectables and fillers for aging, all patients can safely partake.

However, laser technology options are often limited in darker skinned patients. Different settings and modifications are required for safe treatment in this population. Laser companies have recently begun to produce laser devices for treating all skin types, but even those require skill and expertise. The level of training is greater, which not only benefits darker skinned patients, it benefits all patients.

Only certain laser wavelengths and settings can be used on darker skinned patients with effectiveness of treatment while minimizing discomfort.

A board certified dermatologist is the best professional to determine skin aesthetic treatment options and should be consulted prior to starting any treatment. Many times pigmented lesions can be changed by laser treatments, so a full body skin exam by your dermatologist is a good idea prior to starting any laser treatment.

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends removal of suspicious lesions prior to starting laser treatment as the color of your moles may change after treatment. Prior to initiating treatment it is important to understand which technologies are safe for your personal skin type and/or hair type. This is why seeing your dermatologist ahead of time is important.

Even though most cosmetic laser treatments are performed by a technician or estheticion, it is valuable to have a dermatologist on-site when you are having your treatment. This is something patients find reassuring and comforting.

Even though it is realistic to expect some level of discomfort in any procedure, the objective is to make it as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. Patients of color are especially encouraged to seek an expert opinion as aesthetic techniques have come a long way since the early 2000's. Laser treatments used to be a lot more painful back then but some laser companies now have specialized cooling modifications. These recent advances in cooling help enhance comfort and minimize side effects from the procedure for patients of all skin shades.

Anti-aging therapies, creams and supplements are all over the place, so it's even more important to have a medical consultation before you buy. Safety, efficacy, and results are the pearls to remember in skin aesthetic procedures.
