Microdermabrasion
If you desire a more even skin tone, then you may want to consider microdermabrasion. It is also an excellent treatment option for those with superficial skin problems and fast-paced lifestyles because of its little to no side effects and downtime.
Microdermabrasion is particularly useful for those who have pick marks, dull or sallow skin, mild acne, or discoloration and scars as a result of said acne. A traditional crystal microdermabrasion system contains a pump, a connecting tube, a hand piece, and a vacuum. The pump creates a high-pressure stream of crystals to abrade the skin. The vacuum then removes the crystals and exfoliated skin cells. The diamond microdermabrasion system substitutes the use of crystals with a roughened tip surface.
The traditional microdermabrasion system produces particles from the crystals that could potentially be inhaled through the nose or blown into the eyes, but the diamond microdermabrasion machine does not so it is a safer option for areas around the eyes and lips. The slower the movement of the hand piece against the skin, and the more it passes over the skin, the deeper the treatment. Clients or patients that have deeper scarring or pigmentation should expect a much longer series of treatment sessions with this approach.
Dermatologists use microdermabrasion to help unclog pores and clear acne. When used in combination with gentler glycolic peels and medical acne extractions, microdermabrasion can help to speed up the clearing of acne. Deeper acne scars might sometimes make clients or patients candidates for other treatment options such as surgical dermabrasion or laser resurfacing.
Prior to starting the microdermabrasion treatment, eye protection such as eye pads or goggles should be placed. The skin should also be prepared and cleansed of any makeup or oils. No local anesthetic is required for this treatment. To provide some tension to better achieve the most effective abrasion and vacuum, the skin will be stretched. The hand piece then moves over the skin with repeated smooth passes; two to four passes per area are sufficient.
The expected outcome of dermabrasion is softer, smoother skin that feels fresher and more rejuvenated. In addition to this, mild exfoliation of the skin may occur as well. The skin should have a mild pinkness to it and it resolves within minutes to hours after microdermabrasion treatment.
It is crucial to remind clients or patients to apply moisturizer or ointment continuously if exfoliation occurs to avoid drying the skin out. Some patients might also experience a mild, sunburn-like sensation that lasts for a few days. It is also highly recommended that sunscreen be generously applied as the treatment may increase photosensitivity.
Microdermabrasion has many physical benefits but it extends beyond that. This treatment helps to stimulate the production of collagen, which plays a huge role in aiding in skin rejuvenation. Age spots from photoaging and fine lines are also diminished, causing the skin to become significantly softer and smoother.
The results are modest, however, and dependent on the intensity and number of treatments required. If you have any questions or concerns going into microdermabrasion treatment, it is best to consult your physician and then the performing esthetician or technician.
