Tattoo Aftercare Guide and Expectations

So, you’ve just gotten a new tattoo, congratulations! Whether it’s your first piece or the latest addition to your collection, the next few weeks are crucial for making sure your tattoo heals properly and looks great for years to come. Here’s what you can realistically expect from the healing process, along with a few essential aftercare tips straight from the studio floor.

Days 1–3: The Fresh Ink Phase

Right after your appointment, your tattoo will probably feel a little sore and tender—almost like a sunburn. You might notice some redness, swelling, and clear fluid or blood oozing from the tattoo. Don’t worry; this is completely normal. Your artist should provide you with specific aftercare instructions—follow them closely. In general, you’ll want to gently wash the area with mild soap and water, pat it dry with a clean towel, and apply a thin layer of unscented aftercare cream.

Days 4–7: The Scabbing Begins

As your skin starts to recover, the redness and swelling will ease up, and scabbing will likely appear. This part can be uncomfortable, but it’s a natural step in the healing process. Whatever you do, avoid picking or scratching the scabs—doing so could affect the final look of your tattoo or even lead to infection.

Weeks 2–4: Itchiness and Flaking

According to Zane from a Christchurch Tattoo studio, by now, most of the scabs will start to flake off, revealing your tattoo underneath. This phase can get itchy, but resist the urge to scratch. Keep your tattoo moisturised with a fragrance-free lotion to soothe any dryness and help your skin regenerate.

Weeks 4–6: The Finish Line

Depending on the size, placement, and your body’s natural healing rate, your tattoo could take up to six weeks to fully heal. Once it’s completely healed, your ink should look settled, vibrant, and smooth.

Long-Term Tattoo Care Tips

  • Keep It Clean: Especially during the first week, wash your tattoo gently a couple of times a day.
  • Stay Hydrated: Apply a thin layer of aftercare ointment or lotion regularly.
  • Avoid the Sun: UV rays can fade fresh ink fast. Once your tattoo is healed, always use SPF 30+ if it’ll be exposed.

Healing is a process, but with a little patience and the right care, your tattoo will stay sustained.
