Dr. Akara Forsythe is double board certified interventional pain management physician who is native to the Washington, DC area. At age 12, undergoing chemotherapy for a childhood cancer, Dr. Forsythe knew that she wanted to pursue a career in the field of medicine. She settled on interventional pain medicine because she understood that there was no better gift to a patient than reducing pain and improving the quality of their lives. After receiving her Bachelors of Arts from the prestigious University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Forsythe successfully pursued her medical education at the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine, and the world-renowned Johns Hopkins Hospital where she completed her anesthesia residency. After working for a few months at her alma mater, Dr. Forsythe moved to Atlanta for a fellowship in Advanced Interventional Pain medicine at Emory University School of Medicine.
Since finishing training, Dr. Forsythe has been working in the field of interventional pain medicine throughout Maryland. Immediately following training, she served as the director of interventional pain management at Severn Anesthesia and Advanced Pain Management for 4 years. She later joined Kaiser Permanente Medical Group but her passion for providing individualized goal oriented care led her back to private practice. She partnered with Dr. Oppong, MD, Jr. at Innovative Pain Solutions Centers in the spring of 2017. Her areas of special interest include lower back pain, sacroiliac joint pain, complex regional pain syndrome, lumbar radiculopathies, post herpetic neuralgia, peripheral neuropathy, spinal cord stimulation, ketamine for depression and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and treating pain in the setting of addiction.
She believes that her personal experiences as a former patient allow her to provide kind and compassionate care to all who she treats. She believes in partnering with her patients in order to develop the best treatment strategies to reduce pain and improve function. Her patients describe her as compassionate, straight forward, and knowledgeable.
