Keeping It Safe

Last month we talked about keeping yourself and your family safe in 2009. We mentioned several areas to be aware of and then I asked you to rate them from most important or urgent to least. This gives you an idea of what your family needs in terms of knowledge or training in the specific areas as well as what needs to be learned first based on your ranking. This issue Id like to speak more about prevention.
I recently heard that there has been a rash of car break-ins where windows are smashed and cell phones, garage door openers and GPS units are stolen. Thieves and drug dealers have a new thing going to get cash and valuables that they will either sell or pawn to get money for profit or drugs. Its sad, but true.
Here are two examples that will define this entire article and hopefully make you take action to avoid this happening to you. Imagine getting a text message from your husband that he forgot the ATM pin number. You text him back thinking “will he ever learn”? He forgets everything. Then you get a call from him that his cell phone was stolen or he lost it. You ask him if he called about the pin number and he says no. You race to the bank to already find that youve been cleaned out.
Another story is that your car gets broken into while you are at work, the movies or some event that takes a few hours. You come out to find your car was broken into. You make a report, wait for the police and then after that whole ordeal is done you go home only to find out that the thief immediately either got your GPS, hit recent finds and found where you lived. He drove to your home with the guidance of your GPS and then used your garage door opener to open the door and clean you out. Maybe he knew you were at work and had three or four hours to back up a van and take everything. Maybe youre lucky and he just went in for 30 minutes and took all your jewelry. Regardless, youve not only been broken into, youve been violated.
These are two examples that make you wonder how quickly we can be a victim. Now to make things worse, your young nanny and kids could have been there also.
Please heed the advice I give you so you are not a victim. Take anything of value out of visible sight of someone looking into your car. If you have a cigarette lighter adapter, GPS holder on the dash or one of those suction cup holders on the window, its an invitation to the thief saying “Hey, there are some valuable things in here, check the glove compartment, under the seat or the armrest. We just hid it so you didnt see it, but its here.” They know that you are not going to take it with you every time you leave your car.
