Sciatica and Low Back Pain? Realign Your Spine

Did you know that stress causes the spinal bones of your vertebrae to move out of correct alignment? When this misalignment happens it can irritate the spinal nerves, ligaments, and discs as well as the surrounding muscles in your back. It is the most common cause of low back pain today.

Chances are either you or someone you know suffers from back pain at all times. And, 80% of us will eventually experience back pain at some point in our lives. Seven million new victims get low back pain each year.

When a vertebra is displaced and causes pressure on the nerves, the occurrence is called a subluxation. Pain, discomfort, and distortion of the spinal structure affect the brain and nerves that control various bodily functions. Simple chiropractic adjustments can realign these vertebrae and can give relief to the patient.

Spinal degeneration due to stress and activities of daily living occur in four distinct stages.

Stage 1 (up to 20 years of age) spine loses its normal curves due to sports activity, improper seating, and stressful daily activities.

Stage 2 (ages 20 to 40) generally upon X-rays visible signs of decay, disc narrowing and bone spurs are evident. By the age of 40, this condition becomes very common, as seen in 80% of males and 76% of females with moderate disc degeneration.

Stage 3 (ages 40 to 65) advanced bone deformation, permanent spinal scar tissue, more postural imbalances and increased nerve damage.

Stage 4 (ages 65 or older) severe postural imbalance and limited motion. Nerve damage is severe, and we'll begin to see the scar tissues and bones fusing.

One of the symptoms of disc degeneration can be found in the body's longest and largest nerve called the sciatic nerve. When this gets inflamed, you have a condition called sciatica.

Some signs of sciatica include difficulty walking, bending, turning, sitting or standing up. At times, there is acute or chronic low back pain. Also, there may be a sharp, stabbing pain, numbness or tingling sensation that radiates down to the buttocks, thigh, calf or foot.
