Being a Senior Does Not Mean You Have To Slow Down
Health experts recommend that older adults incorporate strength training into their fitness routine. The addition of even a light set of weights can enhance bone density, decrease insulin resistance, affect metabolism and result in better sleep, according to the American Council on Sports Medicine.
Regular exercise not only slows the loss of muscle mass and strengthens bones, but it could also help speed up recovery from surgery, according to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.
Even 30 minutes of moderate physical activity, such as a brisk walk, provides health benefits for older adults, according to the orthopedic association.
Fortunately for today's “baby boomers and beyond,” there are programs available that can reduce fitness center costs to leave no room for excuses for being physically fit.
One such program is SilverSneakers Fitness through Healthways, which partners with several local health facilities. SilverSneakers is provided at no cost by more than 70 health plans nationwide. Through SilverSneakers members are able to find classes designed for all abilities.
Check the silversneakers.com website to find participating fitness facilities near you.
Fitness coaches are trained to assess your particular body to take into account that with age there may also be some diminished endurance, strength, flexibility and balance. During your first session you and your fitness coach should discuss any injuries, joint weakness and other limitations.
Body balance classes (which incorporate elements of flexibility, coordination, balance and core engagement) and body basic classes (low-intensity agility drills) are recommended for all age groups. These programs offer many positives, such as feeling better, getting stronger, and losing weight, which are beneficial at any age.
Healthy Living
Too many of us are misinformed about the impact a lack of exercise or physical activity can have on our bodies. Lack of exercise, poor nutrition, frequent use of tobacco, and alcohol consumption are just some of the primary causes of “chronic disease.”
Look for a fitness facility that offers regular consultations with members to educate you with healthy living tips, such as ways to prepare meals that are simple and easy, and not expensive. Learning how to make the right choices for a healthy mind can only lead to a healthy body.
Additionally, fitness facilities that routinely offer new classes on a regular basis will add a variety to your routine workout and help to eliminate reaching a plateau.
If you are an older adult and not currently participating in a fitness program, don't put it off any longer. Your health depends on it.
