Shopping For Car Insurance In Virginia Part 3

Part 3

In the market for car insurance? Don't know where to start? Don't know what to look for? Well, from an interview with a former car insurance adjuster, here's what to look for when purchasing car insurance. This three part series examines the buying process from an ex-industry insider.

If you missed part one of the series, we discussed understanding your own values and how that applies to the considerations of buying car insurance. In part two, we briefly explored some of the broad details regarding how a policy functions and what it offers. In part three, we will examine car insurance companies and how the market might benefit you.

While the car insurance market is complex, large companies are focusing on competing on two major fronts price and customer service. Just watch a car insurance commercial and you're quite likely to see mention of lower prices or better customer service. That is not to say there are no other differences between companies, but the main differences are in the price and the customer service offered.

It's also important to know that because all states have specific guidelines regarding what types of insurance can be offered by companies, you aren't going to see a high degree of variety between policies. Due to state governance, the number of insurance companies, and the maturity of the car insurance market, there is significant competition. This competition is great for you as a consumer as the margins that companies profit on are very slim and the savings from this over time have been passed on to the consumer.

Yes, it's still painful to write a check every month, or every six months, but for most large companies, the majority of the check that you write goes to cover the losses of other drivers. What this also means to you is that if you have a good driving record and make your payments in a timely manner, then you're a sought-after customer. If you fall into that category, you need to leverage this status and make sure that you shop for better rates from other companies regularly. Obviously, if you love your current carrier's customer service and are pleased with their price, then don't fret over small savings that could be had with a different company (that company's service may not be as pleasing to you). Most companies are eager to keep their existing customers, so before changing companies, always let your own company know of your intent to change and see if they are willing to accommodate you.

As always, make sure you consult a competent attorney when you're making adjustments to your car insurance policy. You want to ensure that in the unfortunate event of an accident, you know what to expect from your policy.
