Todays Olympic teams and individual competitors are often composed of a global melting pot of athletes rather than created by the clear cut national lines of the past, but the Olympics still provide a unique venue for valuable cultural interaction.
As kids watch the elite athletes in the Olympics, they may strive to emulate them. Behind the stunning performances are hours of practice combined with talent honed through physical and mental discipline. Building the basics of movement skills is the best place to start for any child. Gymnastics classes provide excellent preparation for children to use in any sport they choose. Gymnastics builds total body strength, body awareness, and flexibility, as well as, hand-eye coordination. Children build confidence and have fun in gymnastics classes. When kids are confident with physical activity, it becomes an enjoyable outlet and a powerful tool in combating the sedentary lifestyles that contribute to childhood obesity.
The Chinese start their athletes at very young ages, often plucking them out of their families if they meet physical screening standards. In contrast, American children often get started through their love of a sport and early successes. Some athletes are pushed by their parents dreams. However, an athletes self-motivation is one of the most powerful forces in the creation of a champion. The skills, discipline, and self-knowledge gained through sports make all levels of participation valuable.
Watching the Olympics can inspire children, showing them what disciplined, hard-working athletes are capable of performing. Use this inspiration to get children involved in sports.
