October Audiology Awareness Month
Hearing is a major part of how most people experience their surroundings. Despite this, approximately 36 million Americans experience hearing loss every day due to negligent ear care and improper hearing protection.
With your ability to hear being so important, audiologists would like to remind you to focus on improved ear health in the spirit of Audiology Awareness Month this October.
Symptoms of hearing loss may include difficulty understanding speech in busy environments, ringing in the ears, or the inability to distinguish between normal speech and mumbling. If you are exhibiting any of these symptoms, or aiming to avoid them, audiologists have three helpful tips to make sure you maintain the best possible health for your inner ears
Don't just keep it down for your neighbors Your ear maxes out its tolerance for loudness at around 85 decibels for extended periods of time. When going to places where loud sounds are expected, be sure to wear the proper ear protection. When the volume is in your control, keep it at a reasonable level; louder does not mean better.
Just because it fits in there doesn't mean it goes in there Direct trauma to the ear can have an effect on hearing. With the exception of products approved by audiologists, like earplugs or hearing aids, most things should not be put in your ears particularly items like cotton swabs, which can actually cause serious damage to your ears.
Check up on your ear health Knowing is truly half the battle. When you go to an audiologist, you will get an examination that will give you more information on the state of your hearing and what habits you should specifically change to ensure that you maintain proper ear health.
This October, make sure that you are on top of your ear health and that you take the necessary steps to retain your ability to hear. To find out more about audiology awareness, contact a doctor of audiology for information and/or a complete evaluation of your hearing.
