Pain and Yoga
Have you ever experienced a situation where you became ill after someone brought your attention to it? For example, a person goes to the hospital to visit someone. Upon entering the hospital they encounter a woman in despair, who says, “Please pray for my father he is very ill. They admitted him last night and they are running tests on him.” The person responds that they will pray for the woman and her father, and then hugs the woman.
The hugger then asks what are they testing for? The woman says meningitis. Well, the hugger says to herself “Meningitis? Isn't that contagious?” The hugger now perplexed is wondering in her mind, “Do I now have meningitis?” Of course, she Goggles “meningitis,” and right away starts feeling the symptoms.
To think it, is to become it. The more attention we give our discomforts, the more we bring about pain, despair, and depression, which causes our breathing patterns to change in our body and in turn affects our nervous system.
Pain, in most forms, can be managed through yoga (chitta viritthi nirodhah) modification of the mind. Lack of knowing all the facts about an illness or a fancy imagination, lack of sleep, and memory disturbances are all means that can manifest pain in the body.
In the case of the hugger, lack of knowing all the facts about meningitis, caused her pain and suffering until she received the right facts. The woman's father was not contagious.
Truly let go of your worries. They can cause pain, suffering, and depression.
