What to Expect During the Veneer Process: A Step-by-Step Guide

Dental veneers are a popular procedure that can enhance your smile’s appearance. These custom-made shells cover your teeth’s surface, concealing chips, discoloration and other cosmetic concerns. 

While you may love the polished look of veneers, you may also have some questions about the process. Understanding what to expect can help you feel more confident before you book a consultation. 

Step 1: Book a consultation

The first step of the veneers process is scheduling a consultation with your dentist. During this initial visit, they will:

• Discuss your aesthetic goals
• Evaluate your oral health
• Take X-rays or digital scans of your teeth and gums

If you have any underlying oral health issues, such as cavities or gum disease, you’ll need to treat those before moving forward with veneers.

During this consultation, you can ask your dentist questions about the procedure. One of the most common ones is, “How expensive are veneers?” Your dentist can walk you through the various factors that may impact your total cost, from your chosen veneer materials to the number of teeth you want to treat.

Step 2: Prepare your tooth 

If you decide that veneers are right for you, you can book another appointment to prepare your teeth for the procedure. This step typically involves removing a small amount of enamel from each tooth’s surface.

Removing enamel may sound intimidating, but it’s necessary to ensure your veneers don’t look too bulky. In most cases, dentists only need to remove a very small amount of enamel to ensure your veneers fit properly.¹

Step 3: Take impressions and select the right shade

• Prepare them for bonding
• Attach the veneers using a special dental adhesive
• Harden the adhesive with a curing light

Finally, your dentist will check your bite and refine the fit and alignment to ensure everything feels comfortable and functions properly.

Step 6: Adjust to your new smile

It can take a few days to get used to your veneers. Some people notice mild sensitivity or a slightly different bite at first, but this typically improves over time.

Step 7: Care for your veneers

Getting veneers only takes a couple of appointments, but caring for them is an ongoing process. To keep your veneers in good condition, do your best to:

• Brush twice a day 
• Floss daily 
• Visit your dentist regularly for routine cleanings and checkups 
• Avoid biting into hard foods or objects
  

With proper care, veneers can last from five to 20 years, depending on the material used.²

Are veneers worth it?

Dental veneers can transform your teeth’s appearance. They may be a worthwhile investment if you want to feel more confident in your smile.
