Do You Have Loose Fitting Dentures?

Millions of Americans lose teeth due to decay or gum disease every year. Many of these same Americans end up with no teeth at all and choose to get complete dentures to replace their missing teeth. The primary reasons people give for wanting dentures is to improve their smiles, overall facial appearance, and their ability to eat food. But what happens when the bone in your mouth is not sufficient to properly hold a denture? Or what about the person who cannot tolerate the bulky feeling of a denture that makes it uncomfortable or impossible to wear due to their gag reflex?

For years the only option these patients had was to apply adhesive to their dentures to hold them in. However, this solution does not assist those who cannot tolerate the denture covering their palate or for whom adhesive does not fully stabilize the denture.

In recent years a more viable solution has emerged, dental implants. By getting 2-4 dental implants placed into the underlying bone, patients can dramatically improve the comfort and functionality of their upper and lower complete dentures. When dental implants are used to support your dentures they now rely on the implants for stability instead of their gums and bone. This makes the dentures more comfortable to wear and also allows them to be made with shorter peripheral borders since the retention of the denture is not dependent on the anatomical structure of the patient. Now, the denture gains its support from the implants and snaps into place for a secure fit that allows denture wearers to eat foods that would have been nearly impossible to eat with conventional dentures.

The best part about implant retained dentures is that in most cases if you already own a suitable denture it can be retrofitted to attach seamlessly to your newly placed implants. So you can have your implants placed and upon leaving your dentist's office be wearing your “new” snugly fitting dentures. The procedure is quick, predictable, and can be accomplished with minimal post-operative discomfort.

If you or someone you know is struggling with loose fitting dentures know that the problem can be easily solved with dental implants that will make wearing your denture a measurably more pleasant experience.
