Chinese Medicine and Alzeheimer’s

Over 4.5 million Americans suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. It touches one in 10 U.S. families. The disease, which contributed to former President Ronald Reagan’s death, usually begins after age 60, and risk goes up with age.
Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia among older people that seriously affects a person’s ability to carry out daily activities. It involves the parts of the brain that control thought, memory, and language. However, Alzheimer’s disease is not a normal part of aging. At first, the only symptom may be mild forgetfulness. It then progresses to having trouble remembering recent events, activities, or the names of familiar people or things.
The cause of Alzheimer’s disease is still unknown and there is no known cure. Chinese medicine, however, focuses on delaying the onset of the disease and treating its symptoms.
In Chinese medicine, the brain is referred to as the sea of marrow and is believed to be controlled by the kidneys. Therefore, improving kidney function may help the brain develop and improve memory. Similarly, thought is controlled by the spleen and improving the spleen may help improve thinking ability. The spleen and kidneys offer energies to the organs throughout the body that also nourish the brain and nervous system. This prevents degeneration (apoptosis) of organs including the brain.
When the organs like the brain and the central nervous system degenerate or shrink (MRIs indicate the brain capacity in Alzheimer’s patients are smaller then normal people), the tongue will also shrink. The tongue can appear broken or cracked on the surface, with or without red color (Yin deficiency) or with teeth marks (Qi deficiency), or may even have a purple color.
In Chinese medical theory, Alzheimer’s disease belongs to Kidney Yin deficiency, Spleen Qi deficiency or/and Blood stagnation. This explains why just using a single herb doesn’t work well in the clinical treatment of Alzheimer’s. The human body’s response to medications is different in lab experiments and with animals.
Nourish the brain cells and practice anti-aging therapies. This is easy to say but not easy to practice because there are many reasons for a Kidney Yin and Spleen Qi deficiency. High blood pressure, insomnia, high cholesterol, diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, asthma, anxiety, stress, etc. all cause Yin and Qi deficiency. Qi energy and Yin could cause multiple diseases. Solve the primary problem, a Yin and Qi deficiency, naturally and without the side effects of chemical drugs and you may prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s, as well as other diseases.
