Pediatric Dental Home Healthy Smile, Healthy Child

Parents want the very best for their child, especially when it is related to healthcare. Thus, most parents have their child cared for and treated by a pediatrician, a specialist in medicine. The same principle should ideally be applied to a child's oral healthcare. Children would benefit from being cared for and treated by a pediatric dentist, a specialist in dentistry. Pediatric dentists go through an additional two to three years of specialty training after graduating from dental school.

Parents should find a dental home early in life for their child. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends by age one. The idea of taking a child to a pediatric dentist at such an early age may seem a bit odd to many parents because there are hardly any teeth. The importance of an early dental treatment visit is to provide a dental home and inform the parents about proper oral healthcare and diet to prevent any decay from developing.

Whether due to lack of proper oral healthcare or surgery diet, children may develop tooth decay. Too often dental needs are neglected until discomfort or pain becomes

a factor.

Once a child develops decay, treatment should be rendered soon, otherwise the condition can worsen over a period of time. No child should endure the discomfort or pain from tooth decay.

Some children are fantastic when receiving dental treatment; however, some other children need a little help to make the dental experience more comfortable or even possible. Pediatric dentists have the training and experience to provide a safe and comfortable environment for treatment. Some treatment methods may include the use of laughing gas (nitrous oxide), oral or IV sedations.

Prevention by routine daily flossing and brushing is the key for maintaining healthy teeth and gums. Children should spend every minute in a day being happy and loved. Healthy smile, healthy child.
