Acupuncture and Grief

Benjamin Franklin once said,”The only things certain in life are death and taxes.” He wasn't far from the Chinese proverb the only thing which doesn't change is that things always change. This is pointing to the ultimate change from alive to dead. Everything that is alive will die. Every death, or perceived loss, causes grief. It is the case whether it is the death of a loved one, a relationship, or a dream. Furthermore, it cannot be avoided, though many of us try. This is what the sages were talking about, and where acupuncture can be of great use.

The way acupuncture helps is by putting a person in balance with Nature. If Nature knows how to let go, so do people. It is an inborn ability and can only be forgotten through imbalance. This imbalance can be caused by a life-changing incident, illness, or poor lifestyle choices. It can show up as asthma, constipation, hoarding, or in other ways. By putting a person's Qi (chee), or energy into balance, that person can remember how to grieve.

When a person cannot grieve, it puts a halt to everything else. That pause may last as long as the grief is not addressed. Only when we allow ourselves to let go can we move forward. By removing blockages to the flow of the Qi, we can get “unstuck”, acknowledge the grief, and live our life. Then, once we let go of the past, we can shape our destiny. Without grief, there can be no hope. This is because if we cannot let anything go, we cannot make room for anything new.

In the cycle of nature, every season has a main focus. The season of fall focuses on grief. The Metal element is most influential at this time, affecting the lung and large intestine pathways of Qi. Our noses are particularly affected. The air has a special smell and crispness, the temperature is cooling, and days are getting shorter. The energy is moving downward in direction, and the leaves will soon follow as they let go of the trees. Just as this is happening all around us, we are also feeling it inside ourselves. It is perfectly natural to find our thoughts becoming more existential as we face our own mortality. This is a wonderful time to practice letting go and allowing the possibility of new beginnings to be created in the future.
