Is Light Really the Health Multi-Tool Of the Future?

Do you experience moderate acne and are uncomfortable taking Antibiotics? Or, do you experience scaly skin on your face or ears? Dermatologists are now using a newer treatment option that is fixing a wide range of skin problems from acne to actinic keratosis (AKs).

Acne can really be a nuisance in anyone's life. It is the buildup of bacteria in clogged oil glands beneath the skin of teenagers and some adults. The process of the skin becoming irritated, red and swollen resulting in the formation of a “pimple” can be very troublesome for anybody experiencing acne.

AKs develop as a result of years of sun exposure. Because the effect of sun exposure is cumulative, it is your lifetime exposure that increases your risk. Even if you do not find yourself outdoors often, years of simple outdoor tasks such as going out to the mailbox or walking the dog can add up to a significant amount of exposure.

Because AKs take a long time to develop, they generally appear after the age of 40. While most AKs remain benign, studies have shown that approximately 10 percent develop into skin cancer within an average of

two years.

Dermatologists have now found a way to treat skin conditions such as these by using photodynamic therapy machines such as the BLU-U Photodynamic Therapy Illuminator. It can kill bacteria causing acne to once again regain soft, smooth, clear looking skin you once had, and in a two-step process, destroy AKs, which are a possible sign of skin cancer, in less than a 24 hour period.

It is important to remember to inform your dermatologist of any oral medications you may be taking or topical prescriptions or non-prescription products used on areas that will be treated. To date, photodynamic therapy has reported no scarring and is revered for its very low down time. Ask your dermatologist if it is right for you.
