CEREC Innovates Reconstructive Dentistry

Technology today is changing our everyday lives. Many people, however, aren't aware that technology also is impacting dentistry in new and exciting ways. Cutting-edge innovations in dental instruments are requiring less time in the dental chair, causing less discomfort and creating satisfying results. One breakthrough instrument, called CEREC, allows dentists to quickly restore damaged teeth with natural-colored fillings, saving patients time and inconvenience.

What Is CEREC?

CEREC comes from the dental terminology, CEramic REConstruction. With this technology, dentists that have CEREC in their office can conservatively restore damaged teeth in a single appointment using a high-quality ceramic material that is strong, durable, and matches the natural color of other teeth. The process replaces the traditional crown/cap and allows a higher quality, more natural replacement with material that closely resembles natural tooth enamel.

CEREC has over two decades of clinical research and practical experience to support the success of this technology. More than eight million restorations have been performed worldwide using CEREC technology.

How Does the Technology Work?

CEREC uses CAD/CAM (Computer Aided Design / Computer Aided Manufacturing) technology, incorporating a camera, computer and milling machine in one instrument. Dentists with CEREC use a special camera to take an accurate picture of the damaged tooth. This optical impression is transferred and displayed on a color computer screen, where the doctor then uses CAD technology to design the restoration. Then CAM takes over and automatically creates the restoration while the patient waits. Finally, the doctor bonds the new restoration to the surface of the old tooth. The whole process takes about 1-2 hours.

What Does This Innovation Mean For a Patient?

A tooth-colored restoration means no more silver fillings discoloring smiles. The filling is natural-looking, compatible with tissue in the mouth, anti-abrasive and plaque-resistant. A dentist with CEREC in their office no longer needs to create temporaries or take impressions and send them to a lab. Because of this, the traditional second visit has been eliminated. The restorations have been proven precise, safe and effective.

Patients can even have all of their old silver fillings replaced with natural, tooth-colored filling all in one visit.

A CEREC tooth restoration is not just convenient, it is also healthy. Dentists can now use strong tooth-colored materials that are BPA-free to restore your tooth/teeth to their natural strength, function and beauty.

These materials closely match the composition of natural tooth structure. This means when you eat hot food and then drink something cold, the restoration and tooth expand and contract at almost equal rates. This lessens the chance of a fracture during the very torturing cycle a tooth endures with heat, cold and pressure millions of times.

These materials are mechanically and chemically bonded to your tooth so your dentist can conserve as much healthy tooth structure as possible while providing you with a dental restoration that strengthens and beautifies your tooth.

CEREC technology can also be used for veneers to go over chipped or discolored teeth and in some instances can be used to make a bridge to replace a missing tooth. Come see and experience the 21st century way to make a multitude of restorations for your teeth.
