Marc S. Rickford, MD, FACS

Dr. Marc S. Rickford is a general surgeon and bariatric specialist with extensive experience in minimally invasive techniques for both bariatric procedures and complex abdominal surgery and hernia repair.

He specializes in minimally invasive laparoscopic vertical sleeve gastrectomy, laparoscopic “Roux-en-Y gastric bypass” (RYGB and laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding.

As a general surgeon, Dr. Rickford treats conditions that require surgical intervention of the abdominal contents including the esophagus, stomach, intestine, small bowel, colon, pancreas, gallbladder, appendix and bile ducts. He also treats diseases involving the skin and soft tissue and performs hernia repair. He performs general surgical procedures using minimally invasive techniques whenever possible, including inguinal and ventral hernia repair.

In addition to his duties as a general surgeon, Dr. Rickford will be creating UM Capital Region Health’s Bariatric Surgery program. He has developed protocols for a general bariatric program that include health and psychological assessment and nutritional counseling to help ensure a high success and offer his patients a longer, healthier life.

In addition to his clinical expertise Dr. Rickford also brings with him significant healthcare management experience. Most recently he was Chairman of the Providence Hospital Department of Surgery, the Medical Director of the Providence Hospital Bariatric Care Center and the Clinical Chief of Surgery of Providence Hospital. He has served as a board member of the Providence Health System and a member of the Medical Executive Committee for Providence Hospital.

Dr. Rickford sees patients in UM Capital Region Health Medical Group’s offices in Bowie, MD and has surgical privileges in the UM Capital Region Surgery Center in Bowie and UM Prince George’s Hospital Center in Cheverly.
